my reading list got an upgrade.
but some may call it a downgrade. because while i used to have yearly reading goals (which i never reached) and books i only read cause they were popular on booktok (which i rarely finished, unless they were actually good), i’m now taking a simpler, more “suitable for me” approach to my reading habits.
i recently learned that i hate the idea of “reading goals.” while i loved reading in elementary school, and still love reading, i think we’ve started placing a lot of pressure on reaching goals in everything, including reading.
i’m exposing myself here, but this is just how much pressure i put on myself to “hit my reading goals” over the past couple years: i tried to make a booktok account last summer and failed miserably bc reading became a chore; if i didn’t read, i didn’t have any content (i think it’s also important to note that last year, i read a total of 7, maybe 8 books. i had some nerve trying to make a booktok account 😭).
so this year, i’m saying sayonara to reading goals (i didn’t even set a goodreads goal this year 😊), attempting to finish books i don’t care for, and reading books just because everyone else on booktok is. so with that, i thought i’d share some of the books on my newly updated (and simplified) tbr list.
fiction:
the lost ticket: this sounds like a sweet, feel-good book and we could all use some of those, so i’m excited to read this one.
the help: i watched this movie for the first time a couple years ago and it was so good. so i’d love to read the book and compare the similarities and differences.
tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow: i tried reading this book at the end of 2023, but the size of this book was so intimidating. buuut i’ve also heard really great things about this book, so i’m hoping it’ll be worth the (long) read.
self-help/faith-based:
the ruthless elimination of hurry: i’m guilty of rushing through life and always doing something, so i’m hoping this book will help me stop doing that.
you are not behind: building a life you love without having everything you want - if you read this post, then you know this book is a need for me.
blue like jazz: i’m a big fan of donald miller, and scary close is one of my favorite books, so i figured i’d finally read this one.
what are you reading lately? i’d love to know (of course i’ll do extensive research before committing lol, but i’d love to know your recs :)
talk soon,
